Windows identification


If you want to find the motherboard chipset and are running Microsoft Windows, you’ll find the chipset information under the System devices category within the Windows Device Manager. The motherboard chipset is perhaps ALI, AMD, Intel, NVidia, VIA, or SIS. If multiple entries under System devices in Device Manager, search for an entry that mentions “chipset” and one among the manufacturers listed above. An example of a motherboard chipset entry in Device Manager is shown within the picture below.

If there’s no chipset entry within the Device Manager, it will be because the chipset drivers should install on your computer.

If you’re attempting to spot your chipset because you would like to put in drivers, most motherboards accompany a CD that has them thereon. If you do not have a CD that installs these drivers, it is still a subsequent step to spot the chipset. You can download drivers from the net.

Once the motherboard’s brand and model are identified, you’ll visit the motherboard manufacturer’s website for online documentation or a software utility to work out the chipset. An inventory of motherboard manufacturers is out there on our motherboard links page.

You can also try watching the motherboard itself to ascertain if the chipset information is printed thereon. Unfortunately, the chipset information varies by manufacturer and sort of motherboard, so there is no one place to seem for the chipset. Some manufacturers also don’t print the chipset name and series number on their motherboards or have the chipset covered with a conductor. However, if you’ll find the serial number, you’ll find the motherboard details with a serial number search.
